Military leave is the authorised period of absence from duty granted to serving personnel so that they can rest, recover, attend to family and personal matters, or pursue approved development. It is an essential part of maintaining the health, morale and readiness of the force, and every serving member is encouraged to plan and use their entitlement responsibly.
This page explains the categories of leave available, who qualifies, how to apply, and what to expect while on leave. Personnel should always read this guidance together with current service regulations and speak to their unit administrative office for questions about their individual entitlement.
Follow these steps to make sure your leave request is processed quickly and recorded correctly:
Leave is granted subject to the needs of the service. Personnel are expected to observe the following while on leave:
All serving personnel in good standing are entitled to leave in line with their rank, length of service and the prevailing service regulations. Personnel undergoing disciplinary action, or those whose services are critically required for an ongoing operation, may have their leave deferred or restricted by the commanding officer.
Submit a completed leave application through your unit administrative office at least two weeks before the intended start date, except in emergencies. The application is reviewed by your immediate supervisor, approved by the commanding officer, and recorded on your personnel file before you proceed on leave.
Yes. Leave is a privilege granted subject to operational requirements. Where the service needs your return, you may be recalled by your commanding officer, and any days lost may be rescheduled where circumstances allow.
Unused annual leave is generally expected to be taken within the leave year. Whether days can be carried forward, or converted, depends on service regulations and approval from your command. Contact your unit administrative office to confirm your current balance.
